About Our Troop

Rush hour in the Rocky Mountains | Colorado River | Near Glenwood Springs, Colorado | July 2020

We are BSA Troop 870. Welcome to Colorado's High Adventure Scout Troop!

Are you ready for adventure? Camping, hiking, ice climbing, white water rafting, skiing, snorkeling, mountain biking and more? Not just in Colorado but across the United States from a canoe base in northern Minnesota to a sea base in the Florida Keys to sailing off an island along California's coastline. Excited about camping on an aircraft carrier, sleeping under the wings of World War II aircraft, visiting our nation's largest alternative energy research laboratory, or staying overnight in a cave complex deep below Pikes Peak? How about a 10 day backpacking trek in New Mexico's northern mountains, hiking southern Utah's world famous red rock BLM lands, or fly fishing along a Yellowstone National Park river in Wyoming?

With all of these adventures in and beyond the Rocky Mountains you not only have fun experiences but learn new skills and become more prepared for your life. Besides core skills like cooking and first aid, Troop 870 has delivered many sessions covering a diverse set of topics from auto mechanics to welding. This ongoing combination of high adventure with practical life skills has let Troop 870 help nearly 100 Scouts earn their Eagle Scout rank.

If you are ready for these adventures and many other opportunities, then consider joining BSA Troop 870.

Troop 870 has served the Highlands Ranch, Colorado, area since 1997. How Boy Scout Troop 870 is Organized

Troop 870 is considered a medium-sized troop typcially with 45 to 55 active Scouts. We implement a "classic" BSA program that emphasizes a youth-lead program, with rich program content, monthly overnight outings, annual summer camp opportunities aimed both at new scouts and older high adventure scouts, and ample trained adults to monitor, mentor, and supervise the youth. Background activities to support special events are spread among our adults.

New scouts are assigned to New Scout Patrols for their first year. All patrols are assigned one dedicated Assistant Scoutmaster to ensure an adequate adult-to-Scout ratio for monitoring and mentoring.

We seek regular opportunities to engage in service projects not only to allow for rank advancement, but to emphasize a commitment to our community and chartered organization. Troop 870 develops frequent opportunities to connect scouts with their moral compass, reminding them to live the Scout Oath and Law as a life long pursuit, and to aim high by keeping their sights set on obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout.

Troop 870 is uniquely maintains a special Honor Guard. The scouts try out for the "team" and wear the full BSA uniform with a black or red beret, and white gloves.  They are dedicated and practice so they can maintain the highest respect for themselves, their Troop, the BSA program, the community, and the Nation's Colors during flag ceremonies.

Troop 870 and its faithful implementation of the BSA program results in an exceptionally high Scout retention rate both with new Scouts and older Scouts.
